Substantial delays were felt across the city as drivers sought alternative routes through Laverstock.
The railway line was temporarily closed to allow staff to examine the bridge and ensure safety but a normal service was restored by lunchtime.
The road reopened shortly before 1pm following recovery of the lorry.
In a social media update, Wiltshire Police thanked motorists for their patience.
A Network Rail spokesperson said: “On Friday, May 3, Network Rail responded to a bridge strike between Grateley and Salisbury that took place around 8.30am.
"Signage is in place at the junctions surrounding the bridge and, also, at the bridge itself giving drivers plenty of opportunity to stop.
"Network Rail encourages motorists to know the height of their vehicle and, where necessary, take the required diversions.
"We apologise for any inconvenience this line closure caused passengers."
