RESIDENTS are being warned to be vigilant after a report of a distraction burglary in Downton.
The Salisbury Neighbourhood Policing Team said on Facebook that it would like "all residents to be vigilant and to make sure any workers offering gardening work, loft insulation, or general house maintenance have company advertisement or contact details available".
The force added: "There are a number of things you can do to prevent distraction burglary. Always remember 'if in doubt, keep them out'.
Hints and tips from the police included:
- Use your door viewer to see who’s there and if you open the door put the chain on first if available.
- Always ask for ID and check it with the company before letting somebody into your home.
- If there is a phone number of the company, check it in the phone book or online as the number on their identity card could be fake. Close the door while you do this before letting anyone in.
- Genuine callers won’t mind checks. If you feel at all unsure, schedule a time for the caller to come back when a friend or relative is there.
- For pre-planned appointments with companies, a password scheme can be set up - ask them to confirm the chosen password before engaging in any conversation.
