With summer approaching and the holiday season just around the corner, many people turn to Airbnb to find unique and affordable places to stay.
But choosing somewhere online can feel like a risky move so it’s important to read through all the reviews and check every detail to know what you’re signing up to.
While Airbnb claims to offer something for every type of holiday and every budget, this also means that there’s a myriad of weird and wacky places hidden on the site too.
Now we're not saying that weird is by any means a bad thing, but here’s a selection of the most unusual places you can stay at in and around Wiltshire for an out-of-the-box experience.
Weirdest and wackiest Airbnbs in and around Wiltshire
'Private island’ made out of overturned boat and complimentary wheelbarrow… for £81 a night
There aren't many places you can go to in or near Wiltshire and claim that you stayed on a 'private island' - but that's exactly what this quirky Airbnb claims to be.
Located in Fairford, just on the outskirts of Wiltshire, customers who stay here can sleep inside an upturned boat alongside the River Coln.
The accommodation can only be reached by walking across a large field and then crossing a footbridge over the river (hence the 'private island' marketing), and host Leonie even includes a wheelbarrow in her offer to help you transfer your gear.
"Enjoy the lovely setting of this romantic spot in nature, a slice of heaven on a private island, exclusively for your use," she said.
Despite the unusual idea, this Airbnb has great reviews with 4.89 stars.
One reviewer said: "A piece of tranquil paradise and such a unique stay. Just as described in the bio and the other reviews."
But winter reviewers added: "Would have been amazing in the summer but I booked for November so it was like a mud slip and slide through two boggy fields."
The 12th-century, 500-acre castle fit for a king… and an Airbnb customer
Sometimes you log on to Airbnb and find a cheap hotel - other times you find a castle.
This accommodation, hosted by Orchardleigh Estate itself, sits inside a 12th-century Grade II listed castle that's just eight miles out of the Wiltshire border and can sleep up to 12 guests.
It comes with its own private hot tub and a 500-acre private estate, with a golf and country club in short walking distance. Not too shabby.
The castle itself has been described by the host as "A picturesque gothic-style building with three-storey towers to each side of the portcullis latticework wooden gates."
But you better save up your pennies for this one, as the castle stay is priced at a whopping £650 a night (and that's not including the service and cleaning fee on top).
One reviewer said: "We had the most incredible time here for my friend’s surprise 30th birthday trip. We could not believe how beautiful the castle stay was."
Farm stay where you can pick your pig to eat in advance…£390 a night
This one looks like a pretty standard farm stay on the surface, but host Rob offers one feature we think is pretty unusual.
It features three beautifully styled rooms, ensuite bathrooms and a view of the neolithic Silbury Hill in Wiltshire.
But this stable conversion is probably not one for the vegans, as it brings you right into the heart of the farming world with a chance to pre-order your meat to be slaughtered ahead of time.
The 4.94-star farm produces its own meat and will produce a list of beef, lamb, pork and venison options ahead of your visit so you can request meat ready for when you arrive.
One reviewer said: "The accommodation is wonderfully designed and reminded us a bit of Soho farmhouse! The beds were comfy, the kitchen was fully stocked with everything you’d need.
"We purchased farm produce - bacon, Beckhampton bangers and fresh eggs and it was so tasty and fresh."
The immersive shepherd's hut where you can get water from the well
We found plenty of shepherd's huts in Wiltshire listed on Airbnb, but this one has got to be the most highly decorated and eye-catching of them all.
Located in Salisbury, and near Stonehenge, this hut features paintings on every wall and ceiling and even boasts its own World War One wishing well.
Despite the classic feel, the traditional huts are fitted with electricity, water, showers, flushing toilets, heating and WiFi, and priced at £126 a night.
"Fab place and really quirky," said one reviewer.
"Lovely shepherd’s van. So beautifully painted and extremely comfy bed and friendly staff," said another.
The Georgian house experience with private tennis courts…and only £75 a night
In Malmesbury, you can afford a stay in a Grade II listed Georgian house complete with a huge tennis court - for only £75 a night.
Hosts Daniela and Tim certainly help you get your money's worth at Crudwell House and also recommend their favourite local pubs and the best transport options.
And despite being incredibly cheap for such a historic stay, this house is clearly worth it and has received a rating of 4.9 stars - the highest on the list.
"So beautiful and peaceful. This is an amazing stay and I would highly recommend this home to all. It was a truly unique and exceptional stay," said one reviewer.
