MOMPESSON House is officially open for the 2024 season this weekend.

The 18th Century National Trust townhouse, located in Cathedral Close, officially opens its doors to the public on Friday, March 8.

This year, the team at Mompesson House are celebrating the people who kept the historic house running behind the scenes.

For spring, the focus is on artisans who created so much of what makes Mompesson a special place, while summer will be about servants, and autumn will focus on suppliers.

Have you ever wondered what makes plasterwork stay in place? Or how air twists are made in Mompesson’s collection of eighteenth-century drinking glasses? Or even where porcelain originated or who decided what flower arrangements were fashionable? Readers can find the answers to all of these questions when they visit.

Visitors can find out more about the artisans on self-guided tours from Friday, March 22. There will also be a free children’s activity sheet about makers and creators.

Jenny Grene, visitor experience officer, said: "We're so excited to tell some of the stories that don't often get heard.

"Visitors always ask about how our collection was made, how servants lived and how food and drink reached the Dining Room table, so this year we are hoping to answer some of those questions."

After exploring the house, readers can visit the tea room in the corner of the garden which serves hot and cold drinks, cakes and bakes, light lunches and afternoon teas.

Mompesson also has a second-hand bookshop which has been refreshed and stocked up with a variety of titles for the 2024 season.

Books are priced at £2 for paperbacks and £3 for hardbacks with special offers and bargains available throughout the year.

Mompesson House is open Friday to Tuesday, beginning Friday, March 8, 11am to 4pm, with last entry into the house at 3.30pm.

There is no need to book in advance. There are two parking spaces available for Blue Badge holders; readers can call the team in advance on 01722 335659 to book one.

The nearest long-stay car park is Old George Mall. Readers who would like to visit with a group, can call 01722 335659.
