Wiltshire's main heritage centre is closed for alterations until early in the New Year.

The Wiltshire and Swindon History Centre in Chippenham will be shut until January 8.

The archives and local studies services of the history centre hold records for communities across the county, including the archives of the Salisbury Journal.

The Conservation and Museum Advisory Service, Registration Service Copy Certificates and Archaeology services will continue to operate as normal.

The works will see improvements made to the layout and functionality of the help desk, search room and reception areas to improve ease of use and services available to customers.

Councillor Richard Clewer, leader of Wiltshire Council and cabinet member for heritage, said: “Unfortunately it is necessary to close the history centre to undertake these improvements works, so to minimise the impact we’ve scheduled the works for December and the first week of January, which are traditionally the centre’s least busiest times.

“In the meantime, I would encourage anyone with an enquiry to make use of our remote service by contacting the team at archives@wiltshire.gov.uk. We look forward to welcoming people back to an improved history centre in the new year.”
