Since opening in the summer, Salisbury Plain Peregrine Falcons Explorer Scout Unit (boys and girls aged 14 to 17) have been taking part in activities and adventures, encouraged to "ask the bigger questions, think on their feet, be part of a team and always have a plan B up their sleeves".
The Explorer Scouts get the opportunity to decide what activities they want to do and get involved with the planning, giving them the change to develop confidence, leadership, teamwork, and firsthand practical skills.
The teenagers took part in archery, tomahawk throwing, biking, bowling, laser tag, camping when they cooked on open fires, orienteering, expeditions, learning first aid techniques, and passing on their knowledge to younger members in the local Scout Groups.
The Explorer Scouts said they loved being part of the new unit: ‘’I have had the opportunity to try new activities and found a love for archery and hope to progress this’’.
They are looking forward to supporting local community projects in the run up to Christmas, a Christmas Party, a camp for all the members of the Unit and continuing to volunteer with the Beavers, Cubs, and Scouts by helping to deliver their programme of activity each week.
Local volunteer Janet said: "’Explorer Scouts is one of the highlights of my week. In the brief time working with these young people, we’ve seen a big change in their outlook on life. Scouting is more than just having fun. Explorer Scouts learn skills that are essential to their personal development and reaching their full potential.
"Scouting is also fun for adult volunteers as well. Volunteering is not just about giving back, it goes both ways. It improves your well-being, gives you skills for the future, and helps you make new friends (and memories).’’
The Salisbury Plain Peregrine Falcons Explorer Scouts meet on Thursday evenings between 7pm and 9pm at Grey Wolfs Den, Milston Road, Bulford, SP4 9BY.
