A FAMILY-run dancing school which has provided dedicated tuition in the city for more than 40 years is now offering a scholarship programme for up to four children.

The Colton Dancing Academy will cover the cost of all lessons for one discipline – ballet, tap or modern dance for those in school years 1 or 2. The academy will cover the cost of equipment, clothing and footwear for the year, the cost of entry into the annual show and provide tickets for family members.

Ellen Bath whose mother set up the academy and shop Alice's in Wonderland in Fisherton Street in 1976, is now the academy's principle.

She said: “I love dancing, I never wanted to perform but I do love to teach. I have been running it for about 20 years.

"The classes take place in the studios in Park Street where there are two main studios and a large dressing room."

The classes used to take place above the shop in Fisherton Street but moved to Park Street in 1985. Classes are held most evenings after school and on Saturday mornings.

One student who progressed professionally after attending the academy was James Wilkie who eventually went on to become part of the Royal Ballet.

Ellen said: “Our motto is dance for all, so it is whatever your ability. It is about enjoyment and not necessarily about being the next Margot Fonteyn. I want children to enjoy dancing.”

A copy of the application form has been sent out to schools and a completed form should be submitted by November 26, 2023. There will be trial sessions and students will be selected during December with classes starting in January 2024.

All applicants will be informed by December 15 whether they have been accepted.

Classes cater for a wide range of ages including those just starting out from 2-3 years to adult classes where the oldest dancer is aged 81.

The troupe of Colton Dancers will perform at events locally and have performed previously at the Royal Albert Hall, Sadlers Wells, and Disneyland Paris. All pupils are welcome to dance with the troupe.
