AN annual family fun day is celebrating after raising more than £8,000 for the Stars Appeal's prostate cancer and urology fund.
Race For Men, which aims to increase awareness of prostate and testicular cancer, returned to Salisbury on Sunday, May 28. In total the event managed to raise £8,033.87, which was donated to Salisbury Hospital’s prostate and urology department.
Organiser Toby Giles set up the event in 2015 after his dad was diagnosed with cancer. He told the Salisbury Journal: “Back in 2013 my father was diagnosed, and in 2015 we started the first Race for Men. And since then, we’ve done it every single year, my father’s done it every year and he’s recovered from prostate cancer now.

“The event has got bigger, it’s not just a running event any more. We do a five-a-side football tournament, we have live music, we have lots of vendors, food, and lots of things for the kids to do.
“The main thing this year is that we raised around £6,500, and then I did an Iron Man in September to top that up a little bit to raise the money to get us over the £8,000 mark which has taken us up to £55,000 since we first started.”
Toby wanted to thank everyone who attended Race for Men 2023. He said: “From the sponsors to the volunteers and everyone who takes part in the running, the football and those who come down just to listen to the music, every single person that is involved plays a massive part and makes a massive difference.
“The event is for absolutely anyone. Anyone can do the run, anyone can come down on the day.
“I want to say a massive thank you to everyone who has supported the event the whole way through.”

Toby has promised that Race for Men will be even bigger when it returns next year. While he was not able to confirm all the attractions that would be part of the event, he promised that it would have something for everyone.
He continued: “It’s going to be even bigger. We’re still going to have the running event, we’re still going to have the football, we’re going to have the live music on stage all day, and we have a few other things that we’re going to bring into the event which will draw a lot more people.
“We’re going to have climbing walls for kids, bouncy castles, facepainting, all the things that you have at a normal fun day. We are going to make this next year bigger.”
