MOTORISTS are warned to look out for temporary traffic lights and diversions during November when sewage pipes in Amesbury receive a £90,000 makeover to reduce the risk of leaks and potential sewer collapse.

Salisbury Street and Church Street will be closed to through traffic from the King’s Arms to 6 Salisbury Street.

Three-way traffic lights will be in place on Salisbury Road between 6pm and 7am each evening from Monday, November 6 to Friday, November 10.

A diversion will be in place via the A345, Netton, Upper Woodford, Great Durnford, Normanton, and West Amesbury until Friday, November 2.

Project manager Kiarna Homer said: “Relining and sealing sewers in this way helps protect the environment, via the prevention of foul water escaping and groundwater entering the pipes, which can lead to flooding or storm overflows automatically discharging into rivers or the sea if the system becomes overwhelmed."

Protecting the environment will be at the top of the agenda and robots will replace disruptive drilling to complete the majority of the work.

Kiarna Homer said: “Although some excavation will be needed for the construction of manhole chambers, by using ‘no-dig’ techniques as much as possible we can minimise the impact of this work on local communities.’’

Wessex Water has written to customers and businesses close to the locations affected to inform them of the work being carried out.
