Salisbury city market, loved for its variety, history, and great atmosphere, is fast becoming a top destination point for both locals and visitors.
Readers of the Salisbury Journal took to Facebook to express their joy, memories and suggestions about the market.
A visitor named Frances Stanfield commented: "Enjoying our new life in Salisbury and we walk down to the market twice a week. "Eggs, meat, fruit and veg, are all good value and of a quality for which we are thankful." Peter Phelan had fond memories to share: "60 plus years ago I worked on a market stall as a youngster... Happy memories"
Others believe that the market has the potential to be more.
Trevor Simons said, "Brilliant market. Great space and history, local council / groups should do more. We want thriving."
His comment was a sentiment echoed by many others asking for more of the market.
The large size of the market and the diversity of its offerings seem to be among the most appreciated aspects.
As Simon Boxall put it: “It’s a great market with a wonderful diversity of stalls. "The coffee shops and pubs around the square add to the atmosphere.”
The market's nostalgic value was also expressed by many who shared their early memories.
Kath Spreadbury said: “Always loved Salisbury Market, my dad used to take me to the cockle stall and we would have a dish of cockles with vinegar and pepper. "Then get mums veggies and a scout round before going home, great memories.”
The high quality of produce is known to draw some customers away from modern retail giants.
Claire Johnson commented: "We were there yesterday and amazed at the wonderful quality of the fruit and veg, far better than Tesco!"
While most comments were positive, there were suggestions on how the market could draw more crowds.
Commie McMullen suggested, "Could do with a few more street food stalls which would attract more people. "Or they could do a street food stall day"
Salisbury's market appears to be a well-loved institution among residents and visitors alike.
As Philippa Killner accurately summed up, "Really appreciate Salisbury market, lots of variety, great traders, great atmosphere and wonderful quality produce. "One of Salisbury's treasures."
