A WOMAN must engage in an alcoholic rehabilitation course after she spat at police officers, a court heard.

Carly Chant, 34, of Wishford Road in Wilton, pleaded guilty to being drunk and disorderly in a public place and two counts of assaulting an emergency worker at Salisbury Magistrates Court on September 18.

Police were called to Winchester Street at 4.08pm on May 19 to reports of Chant "causing problems in the local area".

A drunk Chant disclosed to police officers that she had been the victim of a sexual matter and said she wanted to provide an evidential sample.

Ryan Seneviratne, prosecuting, said Chant was handed the sample kit but threw it onto the ground.

"That is the first point of unruly behaviour. She became aggressive shouting "f**k this I hope you all die, I hope your mum dies and I hope your kids die," he added.

Chant's behaviour worsened when she arrived at Wiltshire Police's custody suite in Gablecross where she called officers "f***ing pigs" and "wished they all died".

Then, she kicked and spat at PC Windsor's face and glasses before being restrained.

While officers were restraining her, Chant turned her head and spat at PC Lo Bianco which landed on his vest and forearm.

A spit hood was placed over Chant's head and she was successfully restrained to prevent further assaults.

The court heard how she had been convicted of battery and assault by beating an emergency worker in 2019.

Harriet Heard, defending, said Chant was an alcoholic drinking "six bottles of wine a day" when the incident took place.

"She is totally ashamed, shocked and appalled particularly at the spitting," she added.

Ms Heard told the court that Chant has been diagnosed with borderline personality disorder, ADHD and PTSD caused by domestic abuse.

She said: "Her natural instinct is to lash out. It's absolutely no defence and she is very apologetic."

At the time of the hearing, Chant had been sober for two weeks and Ms Heard said her motivation is to eventually have her daughter living with her.

Chair of the bench, magistrate Derek Lott said: “Assaulting police officers is a very serious offence. It’s not the first time either, you have a previous offence.”

Chant was sentenced to a 12-month community order including 20 rehabilitation activity requirement days during which she must actively engage with Turning Point/Connect Wiltshire.

She must also pay £100 in compensation to PC Windsor and PC Lo Bianco.
