A MAJOR solo exhibition depicting the natural world across a series of large canvases is coming to the city with the artist moving away from commissioned work to seek artistic independence.
British artist Spencer Shakespeare’s exhibition will occur at Vanner Gallery on the High Street. The title ‘Crossings’ refers to the journey which brings into being all life and the voyages and movements that come after.
Director of the Vanner Gallery, David Christie, said: “We are thrilled to present Spencer’s outstanding work in Salisbury. He exhibits regularly worldwide and has a dedicated following for his lyrical and expressive work and so, we hope visitors will really enjoy seeing it in the city for the first time.”
Shakespeare became obsessive about drawing at the age of seven and enjoys transcribing places of intersection, the coastline, and the edge of forests – places where a transition of boundaries takes place.

His work denotes mystery, and magic, and is a world where colours are intense and energetic. Abstract canvases show the blurred boundaries of the world he sees.
Having completed a degree in illustration at Bournemouth College of Art and Design (1992-1995), Shakespeare is now an internationally successful artist.
The show is open to the public from Saturday, September 23 and continues until Thursday, October 19.
Entry is free.
