PLANS have been submitted to convert part of a Grade II listed building in the city centre into two flats.

Cross Keys House forms part of the wider Cross Keys Shopping Centre, which also includes a number of listed buildings.

Any alterations to a listed building or any development within the setting of a listed building and conservation area requires the local authority to assess the implications of proposals on built heritage.

The applicants, Quantum Salisbury Centre, want to turn two commercial units into flats.

History

Cross Keys House was built in 1878-9 and was Pickney’s Bank, replacing any earlier structures that existied on the site.

The Building News from September 1878, notes: "The illustration shows the banking premises now erecting at Salisbury for Messrs. Pinckney Brothers."

The building within the medieval chequer that Cross Keys House forms the north west corner of was extensively altered to create the Cross Keys Shopping Centre.

Proposals

The proposed work includes the change of use of two units within the first floor of Cross Keys House from commercial to two residential units.

The proposed flats would sit within the footprint of two existing commercial units, each with two entrances, one from Queen Street and one from the carpark.

The application states: "With a decline in demand for office accommodation and a change in expectations for basic facility standards, the disjointed relationship between façade and floors is now a barrier to the building’s continued use."
