Young archaeology enthusiasts are invited to have a go at unearthing the past by digging up special excavation sandboxes using a selection of archaeology tools.

An event set up by English Heritage invites families to join them at Stonehenge this summer for fun activities providing replica artefacts from across the centuries just ready to be found and gives children the chance to get excited about the past.

Dig supervisors will be on hand to reveal the stories behind the artefacts and to teach children more about the history of Stonehenge.

Head of Historic Properties for Stonehenge, Scott Ashman said: “There’s so much to see and do at Stonehenge this summer and families could easily spend the best part of a day with us, and perhaps make a visit to Old Sarum too.

"Our hands-on summer archaeology activity and Explorer Quest are a great way to have fun and find out some amazing facts about Stonehenge. There’s always more to discover at Stonehenge, and we hope that lots of families will come along and get involved.”

English Heritage is hosting the Stonehenge Kids’ Dig family activity and Explorer Quest every day over the summer holidays giving everyone a chance to connect with the monument in a hands-on way.

Stonehenge is open from 9:30am-7pm throughout the summer with last admissions at 5pm. The Stonehenge Kids’ Dig activity runs until September 3 from 10am - 6pm daily and is suitable for children aged five and upwards to enjoy.
