A KEY road into the city will be made one-way for one year while a multi-million-pound development to improve it takes place.

Construction work on Fisherton Gateway, which will affect Fisherton Street, will begin at the end of July and last until 'summer 2024'.

This was announced at Wiltshire Council's Future High Streets Fund information display at the United Reformed Church on Tuesday, July 11.

Milestone Infrastructure has been contracted to carry out this phase of the £9.4m project which aims to "enhance the public realm and improve pedestrian areas" to make it "easier, safer and more convenient to travel by foot into the city centre".

The project, funded by the central government, includes plans to widen pavements, improve street furniture and wayfinding as well as introduce continuous footways at junctions to provide level crossings, giving pedestrians priority.

Work is expected to take place between 7.30am to 5pm Monday to Friday but Milestone said some night-time road closures will be required for surfacing works.

This is the first phase of the Fisherton Gateway development which later intends to redesign the Salisbury Station forecourt to make it more attractive and accessible.
