In their statement, the veterinary group said: ‘We have had significant numbers of dogs with Haemorrhagic gastroenteritis over the past week. Many patients have progressed to the state where they have needed hospitalisation, fluids, and antibiotics.’
Symptoms of the bug include watery diarrhoea, and vomiting, (containing blood) dogs are likely to be off food but there may be signs of lethargy too.
HGE is potentially a bacteria that attacks the lining of the gut.
The symptoms usually last two to four days.
Endell Vets have advised dog owners to monitor their pets for vomiting or for changes in stool consistency and to seek treatment quickly as it is better for dogs to be treated in the early stages before hospitalisation is needed.
In most cases, dogs will respond well to treatment and recover.
