All trains from Basingstoke were cancelled, leaving hundreds of passengers stranded with no direct routes to Reading, Woking, Southampton or Portsmouth.
Emergency services cordoned off the station, with passengers advised to wait for rail replacement buses or organise their own taxis.
At 7pm, some railway lines reopened but services were still delayed by at least 60 minutes.
The incident came after services were delayed or revised due to a fault on a train between Basingstoke and Exeter St Davids earlier that same day.
Disruption on trains from Basingstoke is expected to continue until the end of Friday, April 21.
South Western Railway said that services would be disrupted due to more trains than usual needing repairs at the same time between Basingstoke and Exeter St Davids. This means trains have to run at reduced speed on all lines.
