PROGRESS has been made on the River Park Project during March with different elements of the project being worked on at the same time.

The environment agency (EA) reported today (Thursday, April 6) that at Millstream Approach Bridge in the Central Car Park, piling is now almost complete for the main bridge structure, and the deck is due to arrive later in April.

This will mean one lane of the car park will be closed with traffic lights on the other lane.

The former Millstream Approach Road Bridge is to be demolished during April to allow channel works to progress more efficiently providing there is no more flooding through the site.

Salisbury River Park Project Lead, Andy Wallis said: “We have trapped and relocated three water voles in the area so these will not be affected by the work.

"They have now gone to their new home near Ringwood, joining the voles that were moved earlier in the project plus some extras to ensure a viable colony."

He said: “Once fish migration ends, gravel berms will be added along a part of the Millstream which will create better habitat for fish during low flows.”

In April, piling work is expected to be finished and abutments will be built. The project progress relies on BT to complete the delayed changeover of some cables, but once this is completed, the footbridge north of the coach park will be demolished and work will start on its replacement.

Andy said: “At Fisherton Recreation area, we’ll continue building flood walls as well as starting on the new footbridge by the boardwalk and excavate the channel and wetland. We’ll also start forming the flood embankment around the edge of the area.”

He added: “All of us involved in this project are very grateful for everyone's ongoing patience. We know this work can be a bit of a nuisance. The end result will be a better, safer Salisbury for residents and nature.”

The Environment Agency is providing a monthly update which will be published here to keep residents informed of the progress being made.
