You may have noticed a large fire crew presence on New Canal this afternoon.

It's nothing to worry about - after investigating the scene, firefighters discovered smoke emanating from a motor ventilated system at the Odeon Cinema on New Canal after responding to reports of a burning smell.

Three fire engines could be seen in front of the cinema as firefighters investigated the incident between 12.11pm and 1.36pm on March 8.

Hannah Tompkins, communications officer for Dorset & Wiltshire Fire and Rescue Service, said: “The motor was isolated and cooled and thermal imaging cameras were used to check for further hotspots.”

The Odeon Cinema is located in John Halle Hall, a Grade I listed building that is one of the oldest existing buildings in Salisbury.

The hall was built by influential wool merchant and mayor of Salisbury John Halle in the 1470s. It has been a cinema since 1931.
