A young farmer who resurrected a rural support club has been recognised with a national award.

Jamie Pottow put together and led a small team of volunteers to help him reform Salisbury Young Farmers’ Club (YFC) and create a community resource for young people.

The 25-year-old, from Salisbury, was presented with the Aspiring Leader Award at the National Federation of Young Farmers' Clubs annual ceremony which recognises its members' achievements.

The awards were held at the National Conference Centre in Birmingham on Saturday, February 11 and hosted by NFYFC president and former international rugby referee Nigel Owens MBE.

Taking on a role in a YFC is an important responsibility and the Aspiring Rural Leader Award celebrates committee members who have gone the extra mile to support or develop their clubs and members.

Chairman Jamie described the night as "unforgettable", adding: "I was ecstatic to be in a room with so many other Young Farmers who have put so much time and effort in. Ours is a new club which has only been going for a year, so to be recognised alongside them is incredible.

“Salisbury as a club has been on and off for the last 20 years. We had a couple of junior leaders from Hampshire who were happy to come up and put some time into it, so I thought why not give it a go?"

The launch of the club has seen many new opportunities for members in the local area and Jamie has been at the forefront of organising a very successful club programme and ensuring the junior members are given fair consideration in the planning of activities.

Judges Johann Tasker, co-host of the Farmers Weekly podcast, Polly Baines, Chair of the NFYFC’s Personal Development Steering Group, and Sarah Jackson, Head of Rural Professional at award sponsors Savills were impressed with the commitment Jamie showed to realise his vision.

Sarah said: “The challenges faced by young leaders in YFC provide unrivalled experience and an excellent grounding to prepare members for the wider world of work and business.

“I was incredibly impressed by Jamie’s dedication to his club, and really look forward to seeing what he does next.”

There were eight award categories from acts of kindness in local communities to developing rural enterprises.
