Salisbury Community Hub for Ukraine will unveil a sculpture in the Guildhall Square to mark the one-year anniversary of the invasion of Ukraine.
The 10-foot-tall sculpture, entitled I Want to Live, is part of the Standing with Giants project, which describes itself as a “community project who create large-scale art installations for people to experience and reflect upon, whilst fundraising for worthy causes.”
I Want to Live is the brainchild of Oxfordshire artist Dan Barton and was previously displayed in Oxford City Centre.
It is made of 15mm laser-cut sheet steel, depicting the silhouette of a soldier holding a baby whilst leading a mother and another child to safety, and will remain in the Guildhall Square until Friday, March 17.
Passers-by will be able to make donations via QR codes listed on accompanying information boards to current charity appeals supporting Ukrainians who have not left their country. The charities participating include:
- The Bearr Trust - 100% of donations will go to Ukrainian and Moldovan NGOs on the ground supporting individuals and communities.
- Salisbury Community Hub for Ukraine aiding those that are sending medical supplies, clothes and equipment and other support to Ukraine.
Jane Ebel, organiser of Salisbury Community Hub for Ukraine, said: “Ordinary people the length and breadth of the County have been incredibly hospitable in sharing their homes with Ukrainians. Now we can all show our support by standing together at this tribute and during the period of Lent reach out and show compassion to those who are suffering.”
