Drivers are being asked to plan ahead and allow extra time as part of the A303 remains closed due to flooding.

National Highways issued the advice to drivers after the A303 eastbound carriageway and entry slip road was closed under the A36 Deptford interchange on Wednesday night.

It is anticipated that one lane will be reopened for traffic by Sunday morning.

A full eastbound closure was put in place for safety reasons between Deptford interchange and the A360 junction at Winterborne Stoke after run-off reached lane two.

Ringway contractors have been trying to manage the floodwater and the initial plans for a contraflow using the westbound carriageway will now not be required.

Although the entry slip road will still remain closed from the A36, lane 2 is expected to be reopened for traffic overnight Saturday for Sunday morning.

Until then eastbound traffic will continue to be diverted from the Deptford interchange, via the A36 and B390 to Shrewton and A360 to rejoin the A303 at the Longbarrow roundabout.

Ian Thompson, south west strategic incident lead for National Highways, said: “Flooding has been a regional issue in the South West, and we’ve done everything we can to prevent the run-off floodwater on the A303 from freezing and creating further issues.

“Further mitigation work will continue over the weekend and hopefully we’ll be in a position to fully reopen the A303 eastbound at this location as soon as it’s safe to do so.”
