THE leader of the Conservative group on Salisbury City Council has stepped down.
It comes after a day after the full council meeting which discussed the council's budget for 2023.
Cllr Charles McGrath was diagnosed with acute myeloid leukaemia in September last year and has been receiving intensive chemotherapy since then.
Some of his treatment has been postponed due to his blood cell counts not recovering fully after his last round of chemotherapy.
His resignation is effective from today (January 17).
Cllr McGrath was elected leader of the Conservative group in August 2021 following the resignation of cllr Paul Cunningham.
Cllr Cunningham, who represented Harnham West, blamed work commitments for his decision to quit.
Cllr McGrath said: "While it is hoped my blood counts will eventually recovery and my treatment will continue, I have taken the decision to stand down as leader of the Conservative group due to this uncertainty."
A new leader will be selected in the coming weeks.
Until then, Cllr Jo Broom will continue as deputy and interim leader.
The Journal wishes Cllr McGrath a speedy recovery.
