A CANCER support charity in Salisbury has been awarded more than a thousand pounds to help it boost its services.

The money is from the Journal's parent company’s charitable arm, The Gannett Foundation,

The foundation is providing £128k in cash to support local charities across the country.

As part of this, Cancer Support Salisbury, on Wilton Road, has been awarded £1,292.60.

Rachel Salter, chairperson and trustee at the charity, wrote the application, and sais she is "absolutely delighted".

Cancer Support Salisbury was formed in September 2019 following the closure of Wessex Cancer Trust's Salisbury Centre.

The team of volunteers who used to work at the trust witnessed first hand the positive impact this type of service had on so many people affected by cancer, so they set about creating their own.

It is a self funded, local charity, founded, and led by a committed team of volunteers offering emotional and practical support to anyone affected by cancer.

Services include an informal weekly social drop-in each Wednesday from 9.30am until 11.30am, and Thursday from 2pm until 5pm.

The volunteer team also run a market stall in Salisbury each month selling home made, and home grown items all donated by clients, volunteers and family members.  This raises on average £350 per month.

Rachel says the charity will use the grant to introduce new therapeutic classes for its clients, which would help extend its current support outside of its existing activities.

It currently has one volunteer who is providing a trial run of yoga classes, and another who would like to trial Reiki/Sound Baths.

The grant will now enable the charity to provide the yoga classes on a more regular basis.

It will also allow it to increase appointments for Complementary Therapies and Counselling.
