BROKEN and "obsolete" traffic lights have been causing issues on the roads across Salisbury.

Harnham Gyratory has been named a hotspot by Wiltshire Council as it looks to replace the "obsolete" equipment, and the red light bulbs on Brown Street near Ivy Street and Trinity Street are also not working and one resident believes it's only a matter of time before a crash.

Where possible, the council has replaced lights with "compatible equipment" but some of them are "in excess of 20 years old" with no equivalent replacement.

The council is sourcing spare equipment from other regions in an attempt to temporarily improve the situation.

Daniel Tanner, a concerned driver from Salisbury, is worried about the broken lights as winter conditions approach.

He said: "I am starting to find the roads around Salisbury are becoming dangerous due to the lack of maintenance to the traffic lights around the ring road and Brown Street.

"I'm sure it won't be long before there is a serious accident due to this."

Councillor Dr Mark McClelland, cabinet member for transport said: “We are aware of the problems with the failed lamps at Harnham Gyratory.

"Where possible the lamps have been replaced with compatible equipment, however some of the equipment is in excess of 20 years old and obsolete and no longer has an equivalent direct replacement.

"In the longer term we plan to replace all the signal heads and the signal controller with more modern equipment. Our signals maintenance contractor has been asked to obtain spares from other regions to temporarily improve the situation in the interim period.”
