A THREE-and-a-half hour city council ended with a debate over nuclear disarmament last night.
Councillor Caroline Corbin had submitted a motion that Salisbury City Council resolves to support Mayors for Peace activities.
According to its website, the purposes of the 'Mayors for Peace' are "to contribute to the attainment of lasting world peace by arousing concern among citizens of the world for the total abolition of nuclear weapons through close solidarity among member cities as well as by striving to solve vital problems for the human race such as starvation and poverty, the plight of refugees, human rights abuses, and environmental degradation".
The meeting started at 6.30pm in the Guildhall last night, and it was around 9.30pm by the time focus shifted to this motion.
It came after a disability audit conducted by Kez Adey, Disability Adviser and Campaigner (Wheels of Freedom), a presentation from Laurence Arnold on the development of Salisbury District Hospital, a presentation from Alex Oram, Community Fundraiser at Salisbury Hospice, and a debate over whether the city council should invite His Majesty the King to the city.
In the end, the city council did vote to the motion to support Mayors for Peace, with chairman of the council cllr Tom Corbin having the cast vote in favour.
There will be more stories to come on last night's meeting.
