AN HISTORICAL landmark in the heart of Salisbury that was damaged when a car crashed into it during a police chase will be restored.
The Poultry Cross - built in the 17th Century and the only remaining market cross in the city centre - suffered damage when a dangerous driver smashed into it in May.
Historic England has now given Salisbury City Council the go-ahead to begin its restoration.
A spokesperson from Salisbury City Coucnil said: "The talented stone masons from Salisbury Cathedral will dismantle and rebuild the South Buttress, which contains the damaged area.
"During dismantling, individual stones will be recorded and those that are undamaged or can be restored will be numbered and used in the rebuild.
"Materials used will be traditional lime mortar and a heritage lime gravity poured grout."
Since May, the landmark has been covered in scaffolding after a structural engineer deemed the monument unsafe.
The city council team will oversee the repair work, which is due to start on Monday, October 24.
