A MARATHON, which starts in Salisbury, will take place this Sunday, on the same day as the London Marathon.

The Clarendon Marathon takes place on October 2 and is more than 90 per cent off road.

It starts in Salisbury and ends at Kings' School in Winchester. As well at the full marathon, shorter routes will also be available with a half marathon and a five mile Clarendon Mini.

On the event's website, it said: "If you are looking for a marathon which is off road, picturesque and challenging then running the Clarendon is the ultimate. Our route takes you from Salisbury to Winchester along the ancient Clarendon Way with a few extra turns here and there to make up a full 26.2 miles. More than 90 per cent is off road, with the trail following country tracks and paths - many of which have not changed since being travelled by the ancient Kings and Queens of England."

The popular event, now in its 23d year, is organised by the Rotary Clubs of Winchester and Salisbury.

Clarendon is famous for its atmosphere with more than 200 cheerful volunteer stewards cheering runners on. Each year tens of thousands of pounds are donated to good causes with many runners taking the opportunity to raise funds for a charity of their choice.

Online entries have now closed. Registration will be possible on the day with an extra £10 donation to Rotary charities. For more details see www.clarendon-marathon.co.uk.
