Your vet should give the horse a complete clinical examination to see if there is an obvious problem ailing the animal. He should also take blood samples to check out the internal organs and also to see if your de-worming has eliminated any possible worm infestations he may have had.

The vet may also recommend that a gastroscopy is carried out. This involves passing a flexible telescope into the gelding's stomach to look for the presence of gastric ulcers. This is a common condition in competition horses that have been fed large quantities of concentrate feeds, are undergoing strenuous exercise and have limited turnout to grass. Gastric ulcers produce poor condition, stary coat, inappetance and a sour attitude. If this is the case he will recommend a change in management, feed and medication.
