A man who was charged with a string of driving offences after a car crashed into Poultry Cross has received a suspended sentence.

Brandon Luke Gamblin, 20, of Chamberlayne Road, Eastleigh, was sentenced at Southampton Crown Court on Monday, September 5, for dangerous driving, failing to stop for police, driving while disqualified and without a licence, and criminal damage.

Court documents state that on May 21 of this year the 20-year-old was driving dangerously on Wilton Road, Fisherton Street, Bridge Street and Silver Street and failed to stop for officers in Wilton Road.

Gamblin was driving an Audi A3 which failed to stop for officers and after a short pursuit the vehicle collided with the monument on Butcher Row just before 12.45am.

The site was cordoned off by police.

After the incident scaffolding had to be put in place after a structural engineer deemed the monument unsafe.

A statement previously given at a Salisbury City Council meeting in June stated that repair work may not be completed until early 2023 and that it would be liaising with Historic England over the restoration.

Gamblin also damaged a police van cage to an unknown value belonging to Wiltshire Police on that same date.

In addition to these offences he was also sentenced for criminal damage to furnishings and other items valued at £144 at Oakdene Caravan Park in St Leonards and St Ives on May 1, 2021.

Gamblin received a concurrent jail sentence of eight months, which was suspended for two years. He was also disqualified from driving for three years with his interim disqualification taken into account.

As part of his sentence he is also required to do up to 30 days of rehabilitation activity requirements and 100 hours of unpaid work.
