UNDERAGE drinkers had their alcohol seized by police as part of a Wiltshire-wide operation carried out over half term.

Officers confiscated spirits, wine and cider as part of the initiative to stop 14 to 17-year-olds drinking in public places.

During the nine day campaign called Operation Embargo police swooped on a number of well known spots where young people congregate in a bid to reduce anti-social behaviour.

"We are pleased with the success of this operation and the overall message we have sent out to young people and the community as a whole," said community affairs inspector Ron Peach.

"I would like to stress that we realise the majority of young people are caring, hard working and law abiding and I would like to appeal to parents and guardians to help us to keep them that way by asking pertinent questions if they come home drunk or smelling of alcohol.

"Please advise them of the consequences of alcohol abuse and let the police know if someone is selling to or supplying your child. We will act.

"Recently we have all seen heard and read of the devastating consequences alcohol related violence and disorder can have on the lives of ordinary people.

"We are well aware that often underage drinking has been the cause and with initiatives like Operation Embargo we are determined to do our part to protect those who live and work in Wiltshire."
