SEVENTY firefighters fought a blaze, which ravaged a thatched house at Burcombe, near Wilton at the weekend.

The fire broke out at the detached property of Salisbury actress and singer Sue Paramor, at about 6.15pm and she got out unharmed after being alerted to the blaze by neighbours.

Fire crews from Wilton, Salisbury, Amesbury and Tisbury dashed to the scene and were joined by crews from other areas, including Fordingbridge, Shaftesbury and Cranborne.

At the height of the blaze there were ten fire engines, an aerial platform and a water carrier in attendance.

Efforts were made to contain the flames to the thatch but due to the ferocity of the fire the roof was destroyed.

But the fire crews successfully recovered a lot of Ms Paramor's possessions and the ground floor of the house was saved from serious fire damage.

A Wiltshire Fire and Rescue Service spokesman said an investigation into the cause of the blaze was being carried out.
