POLICE are "continuing to engage with" a group of people at Holders Field in Amesbury.

On Sunday, July 17, officers reported their awareness of the group, that had based itself on the private land.

Yesterday there were reports of dogs also onsite.

The force says that because this is a civil matter at present, needing to be dealt with at council-level, police powers cannot be used.

Officers also noted the impact of the hot weather.

A spokesperson for Wiltshire Police said: "We are continuing to engage with a group of people at Holders Field in Amesbury.

"We are aware of the ongoing concerns of local residents, but this is currently a civil matter which needs to be led by the landowner, which is the local authority.

"Local officers have been monitoring the situation and carrying out regular visits, and will be visiting the site again this afternoon to consider if it would be appropriate to use any police powers.

"Given the hot weather, we also need to be mindful of the health and wellbeing of those at the site."

Referring to dog reports, the police spokesperson said: "We are also aware of reports yesterday regarding dogs at the site, but no formal complaint has been made to police at this time. A Sergeant attended the site to offer words of advice around keeping dogs under control.

"Please be reassured that we are continuing to review the situation and work with partners to manage the issue appropriately."
