Although there are many products available, the actual anthelmintic drugs which they contain are quite limited, namely: (1) fenbendazole, (2) pyrantel embonate, (3) praziquantel, (4) ivermectin, (5) moxidectin. Some of the latest products contain a combination of the above drugs. Fenbendazole was one of the earliest to come on the market and resistance to this drug has developed in many worms. Hence its use should be strategic rather than routine. Pyrantel embonate is effective against mature red worm and, given at a double dose rate, will treat tapeworm. Praziquantel treats only tapeworm at a single dose rate, and hence is easier to administer. Ivermectin and moxidectin treat bots and most types of worms, but not tapeworms.
