DORSET County Council is to increase its council tax charge by 4.5 per cent in April.

The county's part of the tax is to go up to £1,096 a year for the average Band D property.

Hilary Cox, the council's deputy leader, said an unexpected windfall from the Government had allowed the council to keep the increase well within the permitted maximum increase of five per cent.

"We thought all council tax payers should benefit," she said.
