Witnesses who may have seen the incident, which happened at around 10.15pm on March 22 in High Street, are being urged to come forward.

Police say a man and a woman were waiting at a bus stop when an X4 bus run by Salisbury Reds arrived.

A statement from Wiltshire Police said: "The bus driver, a man in his 40s, was assaulted at the bus stop and suffered a head injury.

"He was taken to Southampton Hospital by air ambulance, however, his injuries were fortunately not as serious as initially thought.

"A man aged in his 50s from Devizes was arrested on suspicion of two counts of criminal damage, racially/religiously aggravated harassment and section 18 GBH, and a woman in her 40s from Melksham was arrested on suspicion of section 18 wounding with intent and using threatening/abusive words or behaviour.

"Both have been released while enquiries are ongoing.

"If you were on the bus at the time, or if you were in the area and witnessed the incident we’d like to hear from you."
