“We hear about these things happening, but it never happens on your doorstep.”

This is the reaction of a business owner after two people were struck by a car in Fisherton Street on Sunday night.

Chris Wadge Clocks was one of four businesses behind a police cordon for most of Monday.

Director Patrick Wadge was informed by a customer who called him on the day.

“We are closed on Mondays anyway so it didn’t affect business, but it is a bit unnerving when it happens so close to you,” he said.

The night before, around 9.45pm, a man is thought to have deliberately driven at pedestrians on the road, leaving two in hospital.

According to police, the car - which may have been a blue Skoda - hit a man and a woman, mounting the pavement before leaving the scene.

Both of them were taken to hospital with non-life threatening injuries.

A police cordon was in place for most of Monday while investigations took place at the scene.

Police cordoned off a section of the street, between Allsorts Secondhand Furniture and Champion Barbers.

The pavement and part of the road was closed, with officers at the scene directing traffic.

Mr Wadge said the police cordon was “a bit disconcerting” as it was so close to his shop, and that these things “never happen on your doorstep”.

The family business, which offers repairs for mechanical clocks and sells antique clocks, has been in the city for 26 years.

The Computer Centre was forced to close for most of the day due to the investigations happening outside its doors.

Manager Chris Zwartouw, who supplied CCTV footage to the police, said he was “very busy” trying to catch up with work after being closed.

He said: “I came to park at work, but saw the police cordon. I asked what had happened, but the police couldn’t tell me anything.

“It wasn’t ideal, as we were hanging around all day, waiting for the call to tell us we could come back into the shop.”

Janet Waters, of Dauwalders, added: “We came to work on Monday morning and saw the police cordon, and obviously had no idea what had happened."

A 25-year-old male suspect was arrested on Sunday night after a search.

Cameron David Bailey, 25, of Mooltan Barracks, Naini Tal Road, Tidworth, has been charged in connection with the incident.

Bailey has been charged with two counts of grievous bodily harm with intent, and driving a motor vehicle dangerously.

He appeared in Salisbury Magistrates Court on Tuesday, where he was refused bail and remanded in custody.

Wiltshire Police said that the incident is not being treated as an act of terrorism but questions remain around the motive.

Speaking about the events, Detective Inspector Dean Garvin said: “This is a deeply concerning incident in which a vehicle appears to have been deliberately driven at pedestrians.

"Two people were injured and taken to hospital. Their injuries could have easily have been much, much worse.

“We are asking members of the public to contact us if you were in the area of Fisherton Street, Salisbury at about 9.45pm on Sunday, and witnessed what took place.

“We would also like to hear from anyone who may have dashcam footage of a Blue Skoda driving around Salisbury city centre late that night.”

If you can help, call police on 101, quoting log 305 of March 27.
