Wiltshire Council is to "look again" at plans to improve Salisbury and Wilton junctions following feedback from the public and Salisbury City Council.

The council is now set to look at improving College Roundabout on the A36, which was originally not included in the plans, after comments were made as part of the consultation.

In the summer, Wiltshire Council held a consultation on the proposals to improve the three junctions at Exeter Street Roundabout, Harnham Gyratory and Park Wall Junction, in a £15m project to reduce congestion and delays across the city.

The council originally intended to submit an outline business case for the project for consideration by the Department for Transport (DfT) in December.

However, in response to consultation feedback, the council is to review traffic flow at the three junctions during peak hours in an attempt to improve the scheme.

The public consultation, held between June 17 and July 18, included presentations to the Salisbury and South Wiltshire Area Boards, presentations to the city council and two public webinars.

There were 290 responses to the online questionnaire and 67 emails were received, which contained a total of 1,214 comments on various aspects of the schemes.

Cllr Dr Mark McClelland, Cabinet Member for Transport, said: “We’ve listened to the valuable feedback we have received on this project from residents and businesses in the south of the county, and as such we’re going to look again at the traffic modelling and layouts for all three junctions.

“We particularly want to look at the traffic flows and their effect on the junctions during peak hours, so we’ll be collecting more traffic data in the spring, as we expect that traffic counts will have returned to nearer pre-pandemic levels by then.

“I’m also delighted to announce that we will be liaising with National Highways over potential improvements at the adjacent College Roundabout on the A36, which may have implications for our scheme.

“This project will improve capacity at these three junctions for motorists, while also making them safer for cyclists and walkers.

“Once we have completed the further work and prepared the outline business case, we’ll submit it to DfT for feedback. We’ll then make changes based on DfT’s feedback before holding further public consultation on the scheme.”

At the time of the consultation, The Journal received many letters on the proposals.

“My experience of the Exeter Street roundabout is that it works fine,” wrote Richard Tambling of Elm Grove Road.

“The junction at the Wilton wall works within its limitations.

“The problem at the Harnham Gyratory is that when the Blandford traffic gets a green light, their lane is often blocked by traffic queueing back from a red light for Harnham.

“Just make both lanes green at the same time and this would solve the problem.”
