AN INITIATIVE to help create safe passages for hedgehogs in Salisbury is in need of support from the community.

Holes for Hedgehogs is the latest project by Salisbury Transition City (STC) and could even see a "hedgehog superhighway" created.

It says that over the last ten years hedgehog populations have plummeted by 40 per cent and urgent action will be needed to reverse this decline.

Allowing hedgehogs to move easily from garden to garden, the group says, would "lessen their need to cross dangerous roads helping more hedgehogs to survive".

Susie Alexander, STC project leader for Holes for Hedgehogs, pictured below, said: “Some friends in Bristol told me about how they had created holes for hedgehogs in the fences in their road, and I thought what a brilliant idea this would be for Salisbury.

Salisbury Journal:

"I suggested it to the people at Salisbury Transition City who were all incredibly enthusiastic about the project and we have a team of volunteers posting leaflets through doors throughout the city.

"I had initially envisaged it as a local scheme just around my area, but STC had bigger and better ideas, and we are hoping it will be taken up all over Salisbury."

Modest size holes of just 13cm diameter are enough to allow their safe passage.
