THE Milford Preservation Group (MPG) is planning on leafleting 500-plus houses after the area became "a solid mass of unmoving cars and angry drivers" earlier this week.

The group say the Milford area has been "most acutely affected" by increasing volumes of traffic, including Milford Mill Road, Petersfinger, Manor Farm Road and Shady Bower, as motorists seek alternative routes to the A36.

The group said: "Earlier this week, Milford Mill Road was a solid mass of unmoving cars and angry drivers – which event triggered this leaflet. The likelihood is that if the pedestrianisation plan for the city centre goes ahead, then Milford’s problems can only worsen."

Possible proposals by the group to limit traffic using Petersfinger and Milford Mill Road – including the Grade 1 Listed bridge – include:

• One-way traffic from Milford House Nursing Home in an easterly direction to the railway bridge, with width restrictions in place to prevent use by HGVs.

- The group say these proposals would not restrict deliveries to Riverbourne Road and Potters’ Way, or to the Nursing Home – but mean shoppers would have to use the ring road to get home.

• A speed camera placed on Milford Mill Road and facing the medieval bridge to enforce 20mph limit.

• Traffic calming measures along Milford Mill Road.

• "Build-outs" on the corner of Queen Manor Road to help pedestrians cross safely to the bridge and Milford Mill Road

• The local Traffic Regulation Order (TRO) to be amended so that Milford Mill Road bridge is specifically protected from overweight HGVs.

• No change.

Once the group is agreed on any measures, it will present them to the Community Area Transport Groups (CATG)
