A 45-year-old has been released on bail after being arrested on suspicion of the attempted theft of the Magna Carta.
The incident at Salisbury Cathedral happened shortly before 5pm on Thursday.
Alarms went off after an attempt was made to smash the glass box surrounding the ancient document.
The Magna Carta was not damaged.
The man has been bailed while officers carry out enquiries.
