MY time in the constituency has been dominated by school visits last week and this.
I make a point of keeping in touch with all our excellent schools and it was lovely to catch up with Woodlands last week, under the inspirational leadership of Matthew Kitley. I look forward to attending Wyvern College’s speech day tonight and to visiting the staff and pupils of Woodford Valley School tomorrow.
I have also had the latest meeting in an ongoing dialogue with the Environment Agency, this time to discuss the concerns of the Salisbury and District Angling Club.
They are one of the most successful clubs in the country and go to great lengths to protect and improve the rivers across Salisbury. I stressed how important it is that such partnerships are fostered, particularly at a time when managing water is so critical.
My postbag has been filled with messages from local driving instructors and business owners worried about proposals to relocate the test centre to Churchfields Industrial Estate.
They fear that the tolerance of other drivers for learners will be severely tested in an area where traffic movements are already so heavy and many of those on the road are commercial drivers with deadlines and targets to meet.
I have written to the DVSA challenging its rationale and look forward to following this up in the coming weeks.
In Westminster, I have been following up on a long-running battle to secure justice for divorcees left with a reduced pensions after the Ministry of Defence made an error in their calculations. I hope Ministers will finally be able to put this mistake right.
I also raised the excellent news that Broad Chalke is to benefit from mobile coverage thanks to the Vodafone Rural Open Sure Signal programme, a programme I hope will be extended to other areas in the future.
Back in Salisbury, my agenda for the rest of the week also includes a meeting with unitary councillors at which the vexed subject of parking charges is certain to come up.
I will be touring Stonehenge with the National Trust to discuss the growing consensus among the heritage community in support of an A303 tunnel and meeting with constituents and officers to discuss flood prevention measures in the Woodford Valley.
