AN afternoon of flowers and fun is being laid on to celebrate a village flower show’s centenary tomorrow.

Breamore Flower Show has been held since 1913, and many of the activities held a century ago are being offered this weekend to celebrate, such as a bowling for a pig contest.

The pig was once a live pig to be won, but 2013’s offering will be ready to cook.

The show will be held at Hulse Hall, as it has since the 1960s.

Sir Edward Hulse said: “We are very excited that it’s the 100th show.

“We’re upping the ante a bit on previous years and holding activities that used to be part of the show years ago.

“The show was started by my great aunt, Lady Edith, who was very keen on the grounds and hoped to pass it on to her son Edward, who was 24 when the show started. Sadly he was killed in battle in 1915 and the estate passed to my grandfather Hamilton.”

He added: “Things have changed a bit with the times. In the 70s we had a competition for the prettiest child and soon realised we’d be making one person very happy and the rest very unhappy, so we stopped that.”

Edna Dymott has been involved in the show since 1951.

She said: “It used to be quite a do, with a whole day of events such as the tug of war, which had teams from all over coming to take part.

“We didn’t have Oasis then, so flower arranging was even more of a challenge as you struggled to keep plant material up and not allow them to droop.

“But it all creates so much fun.”

The show will be held from 2-5pm, with a short speech and prizegiving at about 4.45pm.

There will be bowling for a pig, bran tub, crafts, cream teas, bring and buy and a raffle.
