A ROW over a campsite looks set to continue after councillors deferred a decision on planning issues at a meeting held on Thursday.

Stonehenge Campsite owner William Grant and residents of Berwick St James and Winterbourne Stoke spoke at the meeting of Wiltshire Council’s southern area planning committee on proposed changes to the campsite, which is between the two villages.

The committee voted to allow changes to the landscaping scheme and granted permission for two new toilet/shower blocks to be built behind existing facilities.

But they couldn’t decide on an application for the change of use of land to allow a warden and assistant warden to be accommodated at the site.

Residents have objected to the design and visibility of the shower blocks as “unsympathetic to the countryside”.

But Mr Grant said the temporary buildings are designed to the highest standard and cost £32,000. He said they are desperately needed to provide better facilities for campers.

Cllr Fred Westmoreland said: “I believe that the site is the wrong place, but that argument is lost and at this point we have got to try to help the business.

“To deprive the site of reasonable toilet facilities would be totally unreasonable of this committee. Like everyone else I would like to see something bigger, better and posher, but I think a pre-made pre-fabricated unit may be more successful and more useful than something bigger that they can’t afford and then have to start cutting corners.”

Councillors voted to defer a decision on allowing the change of use of land in order to seek legal advice.
