JOHNSON Julian Frgs Served firstly as an officer in the Duke of Cornwall's Light Infantry in the UK, and then with a colonial unit in west Africa where his father was in the Colonial Medical Service. Transferred to the Royal Military Police in Germany before leaving the Army and spending 3 years back in Africa as passenger manager with Elder Dempster Lines. Returning to UK he joined one of the leading London advertising agencies for 5 years before moving across into manufacturing industry for the next 20 years, retiring as director responsible for overseas activities in a consumer goods subsidiary of Hanson Trust plc. On leaving industry Julian was elected a member of Wiltshire County Council in 1993, taking over the chair of both the Highways and Environment committees before becoming chairman of the Council itself for 2001/02. Moving across to roles in the South West Region, he chaired the regional planning and the transport committees and sat on various Environment Agency and Regional Development Boards as well as the region's European Office in Brussels. During his time in office he met the Queen, Prince Philip and other members of the Royal Family on numerous occasions. Was a member of the New Forest Committee from 1993 and then a founder member of the New Forest National Park Authority when it was established in 2005. Becoming chairman of the authority from 2010 to 2014. Also sat on the governing body of Bishop Wordsworth's School. Has travelled widely and in 2000 was elected a Fellow of the Royal Geographical Society. His wife Jill, formerly an air stewardess with BOAC, shares Julian's passion for visiting remoter parts of the world. They have lived in Salisbury since 1971, and have a son, daughter and four grandchildren. Thanksgiving service at 1pm on Wednesday 25th January 2023 at St Andrew's Church, Nunton.
