MAJOR NABOKOV-MARTIN Edwin died peacefully in Bristol on June 15th, aged 91. Edwin was born in 1930 in Poland, the son of Leonard Martin, who won the Monte Cassino Medal and the Military Cross while serving in Italy, and Maria Nabokov, the cousin of Vladimir Nabokov. With his mother and his sister Teresa, they twice evaded capture by the Red Army during WW2. On arriving in England after the war, Edwin was educated at Gosfield School, before accepting a Commission in the Sherwood Foresters. He served as a Staff Officer during the Aden Insurgency and as an Intelligence Officer in Hong Kong, having achieved a first class honours degree in Mandarin Chinese to add to his native languages of Geman, Russian, and Polish. He also served in Ghana, Northern Ireland, Berlin and Rheindahlen. He married the late Caroline Milton in 1955, and together they experienced the fascinating cultures of these various postings, before enjoying their last 18 years in the Woodford Valley. He will be remembered with fondness by Cassandra, Rupert and Sally, Francis and Sally, his grandchildren, Alice, Sam, Tom, Hannah, Iona, Barney and Mimi, and his great grandchildren, Beatrice, Luca, Florence, Amy, Rolf and Sophie. A Thanksgiving Service will be held on 31st August, 2pm at All Saints, Middle Woodford.
