STUDENTS from schools across Salisbury will once again be able to showcase their ideas of how they believe the city can grow, thanks to an annual challenge.
Salisbury Chamber of Commerce in partnership with the Journal and Salisbury BID is inviting students to showcase how they might want the city and surrounding area to be like in 2035.
In twelve years’ time, all current students will be either finalising an apprenticeship, degree or already be an active member of the work force.
What will the future look like?
Salisbury 2035 will, as now, be for its residents but also those visiting us from all over the world. Everyone; children, young people, the main adult population and the elderly as well as those with a range of disabilities will all need to live and adapt to a new way of life.
What do you envisage?
Entries will be accepted from individual students or more likely from groups of three to four or even whole year groups.
The Chamber, partners, and judges, will be looking in particular to see how teams set out these steps and show progressive change through to 2035.
Make sure it is set out clearly with steps and milestones on the way. It is a requirement to get buy-in from the current population and teams should consider how might this be achieved. Is a certain technology required and how can this be procured?
Issues those entering might want to consider include: Environment/Sustainability, transport, housing, entertainment and amenities, tourism, retail offering, education and skills, submission.
Submissions must include a mix text, photos, plans, and video as well as any other creative ideas the students imagine. Presentations are to be submitted via email by the end May 2024, with the Presentation Day likely to be at the end of June.
Teams will need to look also at sources of funding and potential barriers to success and you should include ways that ideas can be promoted and publicised in order to reach the greatest number of people.
To get you started, take a look at this video which was prepared by one of thre directors.
It gives an impression of what Salisbury might be in 2035 and hints at what changes we could expect.
The project has secured funding to enable some of the best ideas to go to a pilot phase. Prizes totalling £2,000 will be available for winning entries to allow the teams to make further progress and develop their project.
Winners and runners up will be chosen for both Primary, Secondary Schools and Colleges. Winning teams will also receive shopping vouchers to spend in Salisbury.
