Peter Fawcett, former Chairman of The Tintometer Limited, passed away on October 8 at the age of 82.
Born in Salisbury in 1939 to Sidney Fawcett, founding member of Fawcett’s Accountants, and Dorothy Taunton, Peter studied at Repton School in Derbyshire and Trinity College, Dublin.
The great grandson of its founder, Joseph Lovibond, he joined the family firm, The Tintometer Limited after his national service. While working for the company in Germany he met his wife Helga to whom he was married for 57 years.
His two daughters, Corinna and Nicolette, were raised in Salisbury and attended South Wilts Grammar School.
In 1968 Peter oversaw the formation of Tintometer GmbH in Dortmund, Germany with his friend Cay Voss and the business grew rapidly becoming an important member of Dortmund’s business community distributing Lovibond products throughout Europe and the Far East.
A subsidiary company, Optical Glass Accessories Limited, was also established in Wadebridge, Cornwall in the same year and in 1978 The Tintometer Company was founded in Williamsburg, Virginia supporting the Head Office in Salisbury.
Peter became Managing Director of The Tintometer Limited in 1972 and later Chairman, taking great pride in the fact that the company was a family business supported by a large number of loyal and in many cases, long-serving members of staff.
Extremely proud of his Fawcett family heritage, he regularly gave talks on Henry Fawcett, whose statue stands in the Market Square in Salisbury, and his wife Millicent.
He was delighted when in 2018 a statue was unveiled in Parliament Square honouring Dame Millicent Garrett Fawcett for her work as the President of the Suffragist Society.
Following his retirement, he and his wife spent time travelling and at their second home in Tenerife.
His friends will remember him for his sense of humour, entertaining company and dry wit and he will be hugely missed by those who knew and loved him.
