A FAMILY-RUN salon in Salisbury has been given permission to repair and improve its grade II-listed building in the city centre.
Smith England, based at 44 Silver Street, applied in June 2023 to make changes to its front façade, install an oak staircase and create a second-floor balustrade.
Owners Phil and Louise Smith used to run the salon under the Toni & Guy franchise but reopened it under the new name in April 2023.
Wiltshire Council approved the plans and granted listed building consent on Tuesday, November 12.

When the plans were submitted, the applicants said: “The building has been used for 32 years as a hairdressing salon within the Toni & Guy franchise.
“Recently, whilst the use has remained the same, the owners have ceased to be part of the national hairdressing chain and are now running the business under the Smith England title.
“As a result of the change, it has been decided that the fabric of the building needs some repairs and improvements.”
The new staircase will be built between the ground floor and the first floor, and a section of flat roof on will be turned into the glass balustrade, accessed through French doors.
A new shop window and entrance door would be installed under the plans, and hairdressers would benefit from new workstations.
Smith England was previously based at 51 High Street, which is now occupied by The Gatehouse antiques shop.
