A WHEELCHAIR user was tipped out of his chair and kicked on the ground in a “despicable” robbery at the weekend.

The 51-year-old was travelling in a motorised wheelchair along Sycamore Drive in Bishopdown between 1.30am and 2.30am on Sunday when a group of five youths blocked his path and demanded he hand over property.

When he refused they attacked him, tipped him out of the chair and kicked him while he lay on the floor.

The victim shouted for help and tried to raise the alarm as the group ran off in the direction of Bishopdown Farm. They returned a few minutes later and put the wheelchair back on its wheels, but said nothing to the man. They then fled again towards the Jewell Close area after taking his wallet.

The man was able to get home and received hospital treatment the following day for concussion and cuts and bruises.

DS Nigel Porter of Salisbury Police said: “I am absolutely appalled by this behaviour and I am appealing for the help of the community, who will no doubt be equally disgusted, to identify those responsible.”

The offenders were three white men aged between 17 and 20 years old and two white women aged between 16 and 18.

Anyone with information is asked to contact DS Porter on 0845 408000 or Crimestoppers on 0800 555111.
